Multiple projects for Johnson County were planned with the detention center and office building completed. The first projects were a new Adult Detention Center and Sheriff's Office Building located at the Johnson County, New Century Airport in Gardner, KS.

The new detention facility is estimated to be 120,000 square feet and will house 264 inmates with expansion planned to 500 inmates. Cell configuration is single cells with some mixture of dormitory space. The management and operating plan for the facility is based on principles of direct supervision. Support facilities will include: Administration, Intake/Transfer/Release, Classification, Medical, Staff Support, Programs, Visitation, Laundry, Food Service, Maintenance, Access Drives, Landscape and Utilities.

The Sheriff's Facility is approximately 35,000 square feet and includes staff services, records, property, personnel/training, watch commander, patrol, investigations, and communications functions. Site development includes secured and unsecured parking, access drives, landscape, general vehicle maintenance areas with supply storage and secured evidence garage.
